The R.M.Williams company was founded by Mr Reginald Murray Williams.
When encamped, through necessity, with his young family, in South Australia's remote Gammon Ranges in 1932, Reg Williams began, with the help of a man known as Dollar Mick, to craft some of the bush saddlery and equipment required for use on surrounding stations.
R.M. Williams distinctive Longhorn Brand dates back to the days when RM himself was riding boundaries in the vast, lonely reaches of the Territory.
The wild scrub cattle he encountered were a breed unto themselves. Fearless and independent, they were all muscle and sinew and uncertain temper. Hardy animals that had interbred with the wild buffalo and each other. And over the years, without human interference, their horns had grown to an extravagant size and spread.
Years later, when RM was looking for a symbol to reflect the hard wearing, long lasting nature of the products he made, he remembered those ultimate survivors of the harsh outback...the desert Longhorns.
In the years since then, R.M. Williams' stores have been opened in all of the Australian mainland capital cities and a flourishing overseas market has developed. Urban customers have happily identified themselves with the Company's "longhorn" brand and appreciate what it means to all Australians and the many who buy and use the product in other countries.
